Healthy eating week in the Episkopi JRD

To coincide with health ambassador, Matt Dawson’s recent visit to British Forces Cyprus, RCWO Jon Cole, catering manager at the Episkopi junior ranks’ diner, implemented a week of healthy, fat free eating at his unit. With the support of the Sodexo Food Services’ team, Jon made subtle changes to the week’s menu cycle, removing all fried and deep fried items and substituting cream laden sauces with leaner choices. With the tag line “Developed by soldiers for soldiers”, diners at the mess which is predominantly used by members of the 1 Lancs. battalion, were offered boiled, poached, griddled or char grilled options and the changes have been very well received. Feedback from the chain of command down has been very positive; Capt Hoy said that the initiative was “Very good and appears to be a hit, Chinese was excellent,” whilst Cpl Hardy commented that the food was “excellent, should have this choice constantly. Probably the best food I’ve eaten in the JRD.” The trial will now be extended to the island’s other sites.
